What better way to cook supper by starting it at breakfast? Just imagine how delicious your house will smell when you come home from work. The ham ends up tasting slightly sweet, and takes on a lovely orange-ish color as well.
Ingredients
Makes 6 servings
- 1 Boneless half-ham, size is irrelevant as long as it fits in your crockpot
- 2-3 l apple juice
- 2 Tbsp regular or honey mustard
- Pinch of ground cloves
- (optional) 1 cup unsweetened frozen or fresh cranberries
Preparation
1) If ham is frozen, remove from freezer the day before to thaw in your fridge.
2) Place ham in crockpot, unsliced.
3) Pour apple juice in crockpot, enough to leave just the top 1-2 cm of the ham above the juice (amount of juice varies based on how big the ham and your crockpot are - I generally make 1 pitcher of juice from a frozen can and that's always enough).
4) Add mustard and cloves to apple juice and stir well. Note that the cloves have quite a strong flavor, and the more you use the more of that flavor will get into the ham. You don't need much!
5) Turn crockpot on "Low".
6) Forget that it exists for the next 8-9 hours.
7) Optional step: add cranberries after 4 hours of cooking time.
To serve, simply remove ham from the crockpot, slice, and serve plain or with applesauce or mustard. Goes very well with roasted or mashed potatoes and garden salad. Leftover ham can be refrigerated for a few days, and is delicious cold or pan-seared in a sandwich.
